Girish Nath Jha

Prof. Girish Nath Jha teaches Computational Linguistics at Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) at the School of Sanskrit & Indic Studies. He is a concurrent faculty at the School of Engineering, Center of Linguistics and Special Center of e-learning in JNU. Prof Jha has served as the Chairman of the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT), GOI (https://cstt.education.gov.in/en) and designed and developed its searchable glossary application (https://shabd.education.gov.in). At JNU, he was founding dean of the School of Sanskrit & Indic Studies and the Chairperson of the Special Center of Sanskrit Studies. He has held the positions of Director of International Collaboration and Coordinator of Ayurveda Biology at JNU. His research interests include Indian languages, corpora and standards, Sanskrit/Hindi linguistics, lexicography, Indian Knowledge Systems, Machine Translation, e-learning, web/database techniques, software design, localization. Prof Jha was engaged by the Center for Indic Studies, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, USA as “Mukesh and Priti Chatter Distinguished Professor of History of Science” during 2009-12. He was awarded DAAD fellowship in 2014 and 2016 to teach Digital Humanities and Indology at University of Würzburg, Germany. He has been visiting professors at the Florence University (Italy), YSU (Indonesia). He has been awarded the Datta Peetha Asthana Vidwan Award for Sanskrit and the KECSS award for reviving the Sharada script.

Prof. Jha did his M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Linguistics (Computational Linguistics) from JNU and did another MA in Linguistics (Natural Language Interface) from the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, USA in 1999. He worked as a software engineer and software development specialist in USA before joining JNU in 2002. Prof Jha has books from Springer, Cambridge Scholar Publishing among others and has over 147 research papers/articles and more than 417 invited talks. He has supervised 50 Ph.D. and 46 M.Phil. research students so far. Prof Jha has had consultacies from Google, Nuance, Swiftkey, Microsoft Research, Microsoft Corporation, Linguistic Data Consortium (University of Pennsylvania), University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, EZ Data Intelligence among others. Prof Jha has completed several sponsored projects for Indian language technology and has led a consortium of 17 Indian universities/institutes for developing corpora and standards for Indian languages.
