Banyan Tree Network Manifesto
Inspiration for the Banyan Tree Network comes from the book, Being Different, by Rajiv Malhotra. The following is an excerpt:
The banyan tree, beloved in myths and stories across Asia, is unique among trees in that the branches sprout first and eventually bow down to the ground and become the roots of a new tree, each providing nourishment and stability to the entire tree. The tree is a single structure but functions like a complex, decentralized organization, providing shelter and nourishment to birds, animals and humans. Its multiple roots and branches represent multiple origins and sources - all part of the same living organism, even if the whole cannot be comprehended at one glance. Each of the separate roots feeds every trunk, and hence every leaf is connected to the entire root system. There is no "center" of the tree, because its multiple roots, trunks and branches are all interlocked and inseparable. It is polycentric. Likewise, Indian civilization is a network with no central control, an open architecture intertwined internally and externally. It is naturally assimilative, and this makes it a highly efficient system for adaptation and for the fostering of diversity. Besides being majestic and beautiful, the banyan tree is home to all kinds of life and activity. It offers shelter and shade to travelers. Monkeys make it their home. Yogis meditate under it. Village shopkeepers sell their wares beneath its canopy. Villagers gather under it, sharing community news and events. The tree is gigantic, complex and old, yet its size and complexity have coherence and grace.
The above extract serves as a metaphor for different organizations of dharma doing seva across the world, that have their roots in Bharat, the civilizational home of Sanatana Dharma. These organizations have their own separate beliefs and customs, but are interconnected for mutual support.
The Banyan Tree Network celebrates this diversity and brings the organizations together for greater cooperation and resilience. The vast canopy of this tree shelters all seekers of harmony and mutual respect. In this present era of challenges, the members of the Banyan Tree Network pledge to uphold its core values:
Interdependence and Wholeness:
The members shall remain independent and autonomous and embrace their choice of philosophies, texts, gurus, deities, and practices. Everyone is free to follow his/her unique spiritual and intellectual journey. The Banyan Tree Network does not impose uniformity or domination over others. At the same time, the branches are intertwined reflecting the sacred, interconnected nature of the cosmos itself. Modern challenges in health, economic welfare, and environmental sustainability can be addressed in this worldview of wholeness and interconnectivity.
Mutual Respect for Diversity:
The members shall practice mutual respect for others. All paths are honored as legitimate expressions of the human quest for meaning and transcendence. We learn from the best practices of each other to enrich ourselves. Any belief system that denies the legitimacy of another’s existence and seeks dominance through coercion, conversion, or annihilation threatens the DNA of the Banyan Tree Network and cannot be a member.
Civilizational Soil:
Sanatana Dharma is the soil that incubated this great tree and gives it sustenance. It is important to have allegiance to the ancient civilization that has withstood the test of time. This requires a commitment to uphold its wisdom, values, and ethos, irrespective of one’s personal faith or practice.

Its goals lie in unfolding the path towards gnana through studies derived from the Vedas to understand and experience true independence. Chirantana welcomes everybody who wishes to embark on the journey to take charge of their well-being. Our kutumba consists of families, children, youth and inspiring mothers and elders who have taken the sankalpa to not only know themselves, but improve themselves everyday. Our ancestors used these lanterns to guide them on their journey: Shruti- The Vedas, Smriti, Puranas and Itihasa. Chirantana draws on these rich sources of knowledge to pave our paths to acceptance of oneself and the other. We find our roots in the principles expounded in these texts, distinguishing ourselves in our search for true self, letting go of what is assumed to be self. By building a community through intergenerational interaction, we stay roooted to the past, learning from our elders as well as adapting to the demands of the modern world. Chirantana employs introspection and discussion to foster an environment of curiosity and inquisitiveness towards the self and world. Bhuwwaneshvari Foundation
Bhuwwaneshvari Foundation is a village-based Gurukula model rooted in the vision of transforming rural India through value-based and culture-centered education. Established in Madhya Pradesh, the Pāṭhaśālā presently educates more than fifty students from nearby villages, blending timeless Bhāratīya wisdom with modern learning to nurture holistic growth. Students engage in the study of Śāstras, Purāṇas, Bhagavad Gītā, Tarka-Śāstra, and Vaiśeṣika, alongside practical disciplines such as agriculture, business foundations, traditional martial arts, and community sustainability. This integrated approach prepares children not only for intellectual excellence but also for self-reliance, leadership, and service to society.
At the heart of our vision are twenty-four village girls who symbolize the seed of a silent educational revolution. Coming from underprivileged backgrounds, they are being nurtured as future carriers of knowledge and dharmic values. As they grow, marry, and move into different villages, each will have the ability and confidence to establish a new Pāṭhaśālā—creating a living network of empowered women transforming rural education from within. Thus, learning becomes a self-propagating movement that flows naturally through homes, families, and communities.
Our dream is to build a deep Hindu educational ecosystem — a self-sustaining chain of Gurukulas that connect villages through shared values, traditions, and self-reliant education. In the coming years, we aim to develop a complete Gurukula curriculum, from Nursery to Class 12, that harmoniously combines ancient Bhāratīya texts, modern sciences, and experiential learning. Through this model, Bhuwaneshwari Foundation aspires to offer a replicable path toward an enlightened, sustainable, and culturally rooted future for rural Bharat.

Flagship programs such as Mission Annapurna, Mission Warmth, Mission Pragya Chakshu, and Mission Baal Sanskaar continue to bring comfort, nourishment, and dignity to thousands daily. Beyond material aid, DCF also nurtures spiritual and emotional well-being, conducting workshops, meditation programs, and youth guidance sessions to inspire purposeful living.

Valmiki Ashram is the “World’s First Scientific Skill-Based Gurukulam”, reviving the ancient Indian way of holistic education rooted in Sanātana Dharma. It envisions nurturing children through Gurukula-style learning, combining traditional wisdom with modern relevance. The Ashram emphasizes the Ṣaṭpath siksha (Sixfold Learning Path) — encompassing Education, Arts, Agriculture & Sustainability, Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), Life Skills, and Physical Discipline.
Located amidst nature, Valmiki Ashram aims to cultivate character, competence, and compassion through experiential learning. Students engage in daily Dharma-based practices, Sanskrit studies, cultural arts, and indigenous sciences, fostering a deep connection with Bharatiya paramparā (Indian tradition).
Workshops under the IKS program—covering subjects like mathematics, astronomy, Ayurveda, and Vedic philosophy—introduce learners to India’s scientific heritage. Traditional arts and martial practices such as Kalaripayattu and Mallakhamb are reintroduced to strengthen both mind and body.
The Ashram’s mission is to revive the Gurukula ecosystem for the 21st century—creating self-reliant, value-centered individuals who embody the spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.” By harmonizing ancient wisdom and modern skills, Valmiki Ashram stands as a beacon for the rebirth of Bharatiya education—rooted in culture, guided by Dharma, and designed for the future.
